Which 50ft boxcar?

Hi US-TT fans,

After the funnel flow tank car, I have still some on stock, the 3-bay hopper and the 2-bay hopper planned for next year, I will be returning to an old topic, the boxcar. The end of 2020 / beginning 2021, I hope to bring another freight car on the market. And because the 40 ft Gold Coast boxcar is sold in large quantities, also in Europe, and there is no 50ft boxcar, I thought the 50 ft boxcar would be a logical choice.

The question is which one?

That's an easy one- the Pullman Standard PS-1. Built from 1949 until the early 60's, but used until the 1980's at least. They were owned by many different railroads, and there are some variations (mostly door sizes) but that could be done in different runs, especially if you make the door a separate part.

If you look to the bigger railroad companies, such as PRR, CN, CP, NYC, etc than I am not so sure that they used PS1 50 ft boxcars or am I wrong?

Perhaps to add something. Several years ago, I had the discussion with MTB about the successor of the tank car. He had already prepared a 40 ft boxcar and the 3-bay hopper. Due to capacity of his injection molding machine he could not do the 50 ft boxcar. But that has changed.

No, PRR did not have any PS-1 50' boxcars. They had their own design of 50' boxcars. NYC did not have any either.
Many of the components were standard though. Even the PS-1 boxcars themselves were in many variations - different sides, doors, handbrakes, running boards, and trucks. Making the model as a flat kit (as the 40' AAR 1937 boxcar) would be a great advantage + the molds would be less expensive.

Anyway, if you want to use MTB for this project, I would highly recommend to insist on review of the 3D drawings and fixing the errors before any molds are made.

I'd only consider buying such a boxcar if it was one of the more modern ones, i.e. no roofwalk, short ladders and a low brakewheel.

JP is right, make it a flat kit and you can have a lot of opportunities. Older versions with full roofwalks and ladders or modernized, or any combination.
And with a flat kit you could probably cut it down and do a 40 foot PS-1 as well (and those were owned by PRR, NYC and CP).

I miss in the list from jp the models that were built in the early sixties. Like the series MILW 2150-2159 and the C&O 22450-22549. Or these aren't PS-1s?

The PS-1 is a good choice, but I think Mike (Lok-n-Roll) is also working on it. Or am I wrong? On this side (LnR Model archive) are four pre-production samples. I can't tell if they are PS-1s.

MILW 2150-2159 are PS1 boxcars, it is even written on the first of them, but they are quite correctly not in the list. The list says at the top 1949-1960.
C&O boxcars are not in the list for the same reason.

A flat kit is not an option. Assembling seems to be troublesome according to MTB. But I am still a bit doubting. All depends on the investment. How many GC cars are sold in 10 a 15 years? I thought about 2000.

Is the 40ft PS1 sold to CN and CP?

CP yes, CN no.

The flat kits are easier for molding (much less deformation). Rapido changed to a flat kit assembly for their cylindrical hoppers. https://rapidotrains.com/products/freight-cars/3800-cu-ft-covered-hoppers/ho-scale-3800-cu-ft-covered-hopper
Another possibility would be to make somehow more expensive mold with the possibility to change the sides.
The disadvantage of making it as a one piece is that the painting will be more difficult. Many of the PS1 boxcars had black ends (incl. the PRR ones), that was PS's standard solution.
