A basic 12 VDC train set transformer will work just fine for almost all TT scale equipment, we had a pair of Life-Like train set transformers on our portable layout that was stolen by a ct residient, and those power packs worked just fine for our needs.

As long as it puts out reliable 12VDC power and has something to protect against overload conditions (fuse and/or circuit breaker), it should be fine to use.
