GP38-2 question(s)

Are GP38-2 bodyshells still obtainable? How to power them?

Since I'm only just starting to really look into equipment that's so new, I don't yet know much: could a GP38-2 model be used to do a reasonable GP35?

The GP38/-2 is longer than the GP35.
Distance between bogies 34' for the GP38 against 32' for the GP35. This would be the main issue converting a model, having to shorten the wheelbase.
Length over pilots 55' against 51'4"
I haven't looked into the detail differences, but the cab and short hood may be the same (or very similar), while the long hood is very different in all those details like doors and fans because it is much shorter overall.

Okay, thanks! A quick look suggests a GP40-2 is the same length... could those be an option?

Reason I'm asking: I *could* use a GP38-2 as-is, but the SP didn't get any until 1980, whereas there were 35s around in California in my 1966. A GP40-2 I could get away with as a brand-new Cotton Belt unit and say it's making a demo visit to the Coast Line...

Is the GP40-2 not too young? Built from 1972. Don't you mean the GP40? To compare the differences of the types you can use the drawings from Trainiax.net.

With a distance between the truck centers of 32', the GP30 is an upcoming project of Lok-n-Roll.

From what I have looked at, I think just about every GP loco from 38 upwards had 34' truck centres. This includes the -2 series. Traniax (as MacG posted above) has lots of line drawings for EMD products.

You're right, I meant the GP40, not -2. Cotton Belt got 8 of them in 1966.

The GP30 would be welcome, though slightly out of place as they were to my knowledge used on through freights between California and Texas... but not a big deal. More important is that SP got 8 of them in 1963.

The big differences between GP38-2 and GP40 can be found at the roof. One fan more, larger side grills, differences in exhaust stacks, and dynamic brakes.

I do not know which phase the model of the GP38-2 represents.
