The new frames for the F3 from i.materialise arrived. The order was placed 12 November and sent 22 November.

I ordered three sets. Two perhaps will go to other modellers. The cost was 66.21 euros plus shipping, total- 85.71 euros. In addition I paid Canadian duty and tax when it arrived and UPS charged a brokerage fee for collecting the taxes, $22 CAD altogether. Total cost for three sets is $146.55 CAD, or $48.85 CAD per set.

One set alone is priced 22.70 euros. Minimum order is 30 euros, and with shipping one set would cost 49.50 euros, or about $72 CAD. For that amount there might not be taxes added.

I mention all this because for me cost is a major factor, as I live on government pension.

The good news is that the frames fit perfectly. They just snap into place. Nice work.
The photos show the new frames compared with Tillig and Lionel.

Well, what do you know? I designed those frames specifically to fit Lok N Roll gear towers. Total bonus they fit the Tilligs!

Can you give me a link to the boogiside, I cant find Them, and Tillig still has BR 218 (02709) just bought it for MY shop

They look great, make sure you post a photo of the completed loco for us!

Great idea making the Blomberg sideframes as a replacement for an existing part. I did a similar thing with an N scale sideframe recently, but I haven't installed them yet. Great minds think alike or something?

I wonder who came up with that design originally, and then who copied who, Lock n Roll or Tillig?

Lok n Roll last I knew got their gear towers from a company that makes kits and parts for HO trams. Can't remember the name...

It is Halling.

There are differences between the constructions of the trucks. That they fit on Tillig is luck.

The first shell that came to hand when I started the first conversion was this Santa Fe shell.
Sure looks good. Should really be the Blue Bonnet freight scheme to pull freight but this will do for now.
Needs side frames, I have them, and vcouplers. I will drill out the headlight next. Probably make some side skirts. Not sure about the fuel tank yet.
I have two more locomotives on order.

Nothing further has been done to the F3 diesels. During building renovations my apartment is in disarray. I used the time through the holidays to prepare for more work on the models. So I'll show some related items.

I bought a second hand air compressor for the airbrush which I have had for at least twenty years and never used. I bought couplers and drills and thread taps for the coupler screws. Also got a set of grinding wheels and cut off disks for the old Dremel tool. That sort of thing.

The F3s are intended to pull a set of six passenger cars which I bought through ebay as kits made by John Harmon. After the ends are glued on they'll be ready for primer paint. The kits came with sides for Northern Pacific railroad. It was assumed that a Possum Valley F3 would be repainted for NP, so the kits include decals for the NP loco. I plan to set up a temporary paint booth and paint the cars and the F3s at the same time.

The main difficulty with the Harmon kits is that the provided wheels are 30 inch and should be bigger. The wheels have blunt ended axles but new 36 inch Fox Valley wheels have tapered axle ends. To deal with this I bought some Peho bearing inserts. The brass castings needed to be drilled out for the inserts. The photo shows the soldering gun which I use for the work - it's another thing I got recently at low cost. I put copper wire electrodes on the gun. Current passing between the electrodes through the casting heats up the area for the brass inserts.

Also in the photo are old vs new wheels. The side frames still on the sprue are drilled out and ready to receive the inserts.

As you may imagine this work is pretty time consuming. Another modeller suggested that Harmon put undersized wheels in the kits to save money because they were what he had on hand. I see it as another reason people turned to N scale.

Judging from photos, Northern Pacific passenger cars did not have skirts between the wheels, only at the ends, except for dome cars. I left the skirts on these models because without them one can see that the underfloor details are primitive.
