From Vancouver Island to the Prairies on a 4x8

Post by TheKnighTT » Tue Jun 15, 2021 2:49 pm

"There was a time in this fair land, when the railroad did not run..."

The title sums up somewhat humorously my ideas for my upcoming layout. In about two years we will switch rooms with our daughters and that will give me a bigger room in which I can build my layout, but which will still be my office during office hours. I had the idea of doing a 2,5 × 7 foot layout, but the new idea is to do a 1 foot to 2 foot wide layout all along the walls. And I haven't decided on what exact prototype location I want to squeeze onto that. But right now it will be Canadian Pacific Transition Era.

But in preparation for that I build my first stretch of track. Because I never got started on the simple 1 house, 1 crossing, 1 switch, 1 teamtrack, etc., I kept it even more simple.

I am satisfied with the result for a first try, I won't be satisfied if this is the level I will stay on.

The grass is somewhat static. It shows the limits of my $5-self made grass master I used for war gaming. I shall get a professional grass master in the future.
The telegraph poles are from Auhagen and I have not modified them yet to look more North American.

Your $5 self made grass master works really well.

"And when the young man's fancy was turnin' to the spring
The railroad men grew restless for to hear the hammers ring"

We´re not moving to Oslo, Norway, this summer; unfortunately my wife did not get a job at the German school, because they needed a math teacher more urgently than an English teacher. Because we were waiting for a decision by the school I did not build anything layout wise, but concentrated on rolling stock. But now I changed office/hobby rooms I have a new space for a small layout.

My next project are some points using the Caboose Industries switch handles (is that the word?) and a Kadee uncoupling magnet.

What a beautiful railroad layout place! How will you polarize the frog when you set the turnouts with Caboose Industries Ground Throws? Or have you opted for Ground Throws with contacts?

Now that you mentioned it... I didn´t think about polarizing the frogs. I looked up the Caboose Industries ground throws, they are available with contacts for polarizing. I might use those later, but I don´t want to overcomplicate things at this stage. I did build my timesaver with polarized frogs and I will definately have polarized frogs on the layout.

The girls wanted to run some trains, so we had the first layout test. The track plan might change.
