SP sugar beet gons in lemon service

Post by Marquette »

Tim O'Connor posted this in the SP Prototype Modelers facebook group showing sugar beet gons filled with lemons bound for a juice plant in Anaheim from Yuma, Arizona.

I've always liked those cars... this could be an excuse to model some!

It's a nice find. They look a lot like the converted hopper cars for the woodchip service.

That is a very cool load. A very bright load also!

It looks like there is plenty of info out there on the sugar beet gons, so any excuse to build something is a good excuse.

I'm just wondering what condition the lemons on the bottom are in. There's probably 100 cubic feet of lemonade in each of those gons lol.

Probably not great, but they're going for juicing, so...

That could be true by around 3,400 cubic feet of lemons per car according to this specification sheet. But are the drop bottom gons leakproof?
