This has to be one of the coolest old passenger cars I've ever seen!

It looks like a loaf of bread on wheels!

Seriously, I do love the SNCF.

These were originally built for the CF du Nord and CF du Nord-Belge... and yeah they just *scream* "1930s France", don't they?

Indeed. Fits right in with my love for Toulouse-Lautrec, Eugène Grasset, Aubrey Beardsley, Gaudí, Austrian and Hungarian szecesszió, Jugendstil, the old Paris Metro station entrances...

Hey guys, while you’re waiting for the paint to dry on the Galeries Lafayette, can you design us some railway cars?

Joke aside, SNCF considers part of their duties to promote good design. It was (is?) explicit in their mission statement.

They always hired famous artists to do design work for them. The TGV stations look like designed by Calatrava because they were.

It is part of a bigger mission of the French government. Since Louis 14 is no longer here to boss people into building another Versailles, the French state steps in to do the job.
