Thanks. Tillig is the only option these days. The MTB trucks were a LOT cheaper when they were available.
I could have used the BR 101 trucks which would have allowed cleaning out the area around the brake shoes, etc, for a better appearance, as it only has a frame section across the top however, this also reduces the glueable surface area meaning they are more likely to fall off with to much handling. As these are going to be painted black I figured it didn't matter that much. It's only when you take a photo and blow it up you see all the extra faults and cleaning up I missed.

Ian,
Will you be able to compile a list of components you used to make this complete assembly, and where you got them from or whether you made them yourself, so others (maybe me included) can make one?

Rod,

Yes, that's the plan. Just waiting until I've got a operational chassis that runs around my little layout without any problems.

It's finally all go. Few steps backwards & some alterations to the original idea but, it works. Chassis / drive will never win any beauty contests but, IT WORKS and when the body's on and it goes, who cares.

The observant will notice it's back to EMD sideframes. The Alco/GE sideframes on the BR215 trucks are a fraction too long and restrict the truck movement so it was back to the original BR 101 trucks with the Lionel sideframes.
Even then I've had to bevel the inside edges of the fuel tank ends to allow for smooth operation.

I've put a very short video on youtube - https://youtu.be/sWn3mhtdZpU

This is running around my small layout. It is Kuehn track, running through the tightest radius and curved switches.

Mods to Tillig parts;-
1/ Gear casings need to have the bottom protrusions cut off to give a flush finish along the base.
IMG_0759.JPG
2/ The sideframe / wheel retaining plate. Because the BR215 wheelsets are a smaller diameter that the BR101, the underside needs to be filed flat otherwise, it will catch or drag when going through the points / switches / turnouts.
