MacG,
The letters were flaked using a fibreglass pen/scratch brush. You rub it over the surface to remove some of the decal printing.

As for the weathering, I tried hard not to do too much on the first pair. It's easy to get carried away! The paint seems to have stood up well on these cars, so just light weathering on the first ones for a few years service. But the last one, as these cars are still in service (or certainly photographed in the last 20 years) they have had a hard life, and it shows :smile:
