Güterzuggepäckwagen and Gepäckwagen differences

Post by Rich1853 »

What are the differences between the Güterzuggepäckwagen (frieght train luggage car) and the
Gepäckwagen (luggage car) besides the length and the type of train it was design to be used on.

Better late than never.
Güterzuggepäckwagen (Pwg, g like Güterzug) were used somewhat like cabooses/vans. Given the shorter distances, they did not have sleeping facilies. They were the train chief´s office, used to supervise the train, crew compartment, storage for tools and equipment. They usually ran right behind the locomotive.

Gepäckwagen (PW) were used as baggage cars in passenger trains. They were larger and used for checked in baggage and bicycles and in the earlier times had compartments for dogs.

They were not interchanged between passenger and freight service and the designs were usually different. The Pwgs88 of GDR´s Deutsche Reichsbahn were an exceptions, those were used in passenger as well as in freight service.

The DR is cool because you could actually see any combinations on the tracks. Whatever models you have, just make a train from them and it's prototypical. I'm exaggerating a bit but some of the combos that you see in pictures are pretty diverse and out of what would be considered normal.
