Agreed.....the kit components for the transformer are very basic (a wood block with some wood trim pieces). I was thinking of using either a large transformer from N-scale substation kit or small transformer from H0-scale substation kit.

I have a pair of UTTSOs... (Unidentified TT Scale Objects) which are apparently brass copy-casts of the plastic FD model sides... I think they were done in Germany.
As designed... the kit is similar to the famous New Haven transformer cars: I intend to stretch the frame with brass stock to make something a bit more modern:
