Here is a short clip of one of our HP 2-8-0s running on a temporary loop of track, so that we can at least have some TT scale trains running, while we build a new layout:

You know what you COULD do while working on the new layout? I'm doing this right now - use 2" foam as shelving material. Paint it brown and throw some grass on it and put the tracks on top of that. I have that shelf going around (almost) the whole room now. You can do it in a couple of days and no tools needed other than a razor blade and drill to put up the shelf supports.

That is a pretty good idea, I wonder how well that would work while renovations are going on.
