UP Excursion Train Water Tender

UP Excursion Train Water Tender

Postby James-Train-Parts » Tue Aug 05, 2014 8:28 am

Hi all,

I am currently going through the process of converting my UP Excursion Train Water Tender kits form N scale to HO and it would seem the idea time to create a TT scale kit as well. Not being up-to-date with US TT I am not familiar with what couplings you predominantly use. Please could somebody point me in the right direction? Also who would be a good supplier of 33" wheels sets?

Here are some shot of my N scale tenders.

And the pre-Rebuilt tenders.

Hello James

I want those in TT!  And not only for the excursion train. It would save me a lot of scratchbuilding.
Two types of couplers are used in TT: Kadee 714 (HOn3) and various versions of MTL couplers (N scale). If you make the coupler mounting area according to Kadee 714, but the hole for the screw according to MTL (1015, 1016, 1025), everyone would be happy. (it is easier to widen the hole than to make it smaller)
MTL 1015 and 1016 have the same height as Kadee 714, so if you make the coupler height correct for Kadee, it would be also OK for those. MTL 1025 may need a shim.
The center of the knuckle is supposed to be 7.14 mm or 0.281" above the rail top, according to NMRA S-2 standard

Fox Valley Models has just released "fine-scale" (narrower-than-standard) wheelsets - see at tt-scale-wheelsets-are-here-t2277.html - they are available on ebay, and reasonably priced, but as a manufacturer you may want to contact them directly.

Welcome to the "Scale of the Middle" (as the Germans like to say)!

I forgot the wheels, sorry.
Gerhard mentioned the fine scale wheels.
Normal, coarse scale wheels are/were made by Gold Coast Railway and several European manufacturers. Or old HP Products wheels. Any would work for me, I have enough replacement wheels of several types.
I could use some extra trucks

Welcome aboard James! I'd be interested in these kits if you make them available.
