Underway on Nuclear Power?

Underway on Nuclear Power?

Postby AstroGoat760 » Sun Jan 07, 2018 4:29 pm

After some thought, we have decided to have a look into how much it would be to create a miniature nuclear power plant (fake of course, trying to lug around a real reactor would be prohibitively heavy  ), we are trying to find kits much like the one pictured below:

Any thoughts?

The thought has crossed my mind, but cooling towers are difficult to make a model of by hand due to their shape.

Does anyone know where I could find a decent sized cooling tower model?

Cooling tower for a nuclear power plant is supposed to be larger than on Heljan's HO model. Why not use that model for TT? Only the house with control room and offices has to be scratch build in TT or replaced by something else.

Not all nuclear power plants have cooling towers. Those located at the coast do not need any, they use sea water for cooling.

This can be used for inspiration:

Not in Heljan's current model line up as far as I know, but one can probably be found. That model probably became a tough sell after Chernobyl and Japan incidents.

I would bet money on that.

I built the N Scale version and the cooling towers, you got two, were decidedly well underscale. An HO version might still be too small. Several companies utilized those molds over the years, so the kits are probably out there. ConCor may still have some in their warehouse.

I am quite sure that the cooling towers would be on the small side, but I am going for a rough approximation more than anything else. I am looking to put said power plant on either a 2' x 2' module or a 2' x 4' module, so going for scale detail just is not going to happen for this model power plant.

I have found empty boxes of computer wire (Cat 5). These boxes have a "snout" that allows one to leave the box at one end of the building, and pull a few hundred feet away, without tangling in the box. A pair of tese might make for a cooling tower. There are a few styles out there, depending on the cable manufacturer.
