Two Axle Switcher

Two Axle Switcher

Like I don't have enough projects on the stove. I wouldn't need another, right? Wrong. If I don't do it now it might never get done. Plus I'm going to need something for my logging line before I build the Class A Climax which will take some time. So I'm going to build something that won't take to long, I hope.

Sitting on my over crowed workbench is this set of trucks from a Model Die Casting Shay that I picked up somewhere. Plus a 6 volt motor.

This is the donor locomotive. Somewhere there should be a second set of trucks. If I ever find them I'll make two switchers. Right now I'm not even sure I have a second set.

And while I'm posting this the Sherline is happily milling away on the 5th jig. Only 20 more to go.

I think that describes most of us.

Looking forward to seeing the end result.

Except most of us don't get things done at even a fraction of the pace that Bernd sets.

Bernd - congratulations on your enthusiasm! Here's wishing you continued success with your projects, and hoping you don't burn out too soon...

Thanks guys. Time to burn out comes around spring time when I'm itching to get outside. Then I hope for rain so I can get back into the shop. You don't know how many years I spent at work thinking about staying home getting involved with doing model railroad projects.

This project should be a short one. It'll mainly consist of mounting the motor and building a wood boxcab, plus some details.

Charged up a lithium 3.7volt battery last night and gave the chassis a test run today. I made a short video of it. The motor is a 6 volt motor so speed is at about half. It looks like the pulley combination will be just right. Now to work on the shell.

I just found my other boxes with the MDC Shay kits. So now I have two more trucks to convert.

Here's some close ups of the individual parts.

Image

The wheels with the gears on the wheel itself.

Image

They need to be trimmed off.

Image

The truck gearbox.

Image

These will need trimming to fit TT scale gauge.

I'm going to put up a page on my website giving further details on making the conversion and will post the hight lights here on the forum.

It's been 6 months since I've worked on this project.

Today I added wheel wipers and soldered everything up. I used a PC piece plus 2 .010: phosphor bronze wipers.

Mounted on the bottom of the truck.

Image

Wipers bent to contact the wheels.

Wires added and soldered to the motor.

Ready for a test run.

It'll probably be another 6 months before I get to work on a body. I sure hope not.
