MacG,

Would/could the "N" scale dapol coupler have any application for North American TT stock? How do these couplers work? Would they be compatible with Kadee and Microtrains couplers? The dapol coupler looks very realistic to me. Are they reliable in actual use?

The Dapol coupler /does/ couple up with the MT couplers (and by extension, I imagine the Kadees, too). However, as I mentioned, if you use the Dapol coupler in a NEM pocket as it's designed to do, it will be too low to couple up with an MT/Kadee coupler mounted at a proper height.

What I meant is that the Russians dont use NEM coupler sockets.

Maybe, maybe Dapol will be popular sometime in future.
But I've tested Dapol couplers:
1) They look very ugly, if you put shem in standart NEM socket, they are hanging too low. They do not look like real coupler on the locomotive or car.
2) It is VERY easy to lose the spring. They are placed on the outside, without any box or cover.

And in addition some old cars and locomotives do not have NEM socket. It is not a problem if we use BTTB or Tillig couplers - for example, I replaced couplers for all my old Zeuke cars, using BTTB-style couplers made by Tillig (with "flat tail")), or we can use them "as is", but as I know there are no Dapol couplers compatible with old BTTB cars or locomotives. We need compatibility - there are a lot of old BTTB, early Tillig and early Peresvet stuff here in Russia

We use. :) New Peresvet cars use NEM sockets.
But we use BTTB-style couplers, or Tillig, not Dapol.

I guess this is a recent (1 or 2 years) change? None of the Peresvet models I have use NEM sockets.

As for couplers... it is a problem. From one side, we (Russians) need a couplers that look like SA-3. Kadee or MicroTrain would be great.
From other side, we need to use German locomotives and cars, so we are to use BTTB or Tillig or Kuehn couplers, and we can't use Kadee without some additional work...

You can use MTL 2001 (and similar) without much additional work.
Here is a picture from Prague model club where they use MTL 1015/1016. They have chosen to mount them lower (5.5 mm) than standard (7 mm). Then they could use the original holes for couplers on BTTB/Tillig locomotives with MTL 1015/16.
MTL 2001 would be a better solution for Russia. You'd get the coupler to the correct height while still using the original holes for couplers in the old BTTB and Tillig engines.
And, of course, you'd be able to use MTL 1015/16 on the cars where the coupler mounting area is higher.

BTW, Ikarus-286 (not 280) transit bus was in use in USA in 1980s...
