Steam in China

Postby krokodil » Wed Apr 10, 2013 2:41 am

Here is a short scene from my last film made in China:

The 44 min film will be available in May with German narration and switchable English subtitles.
Lot of original sounds and cabride portions on the last, still regularly working steam train behind the barbed wire in China.

Are steam locomotives still in use in China?
I've read the Russian "Zheleznodorozhnoe Delo" ("Railway Business") magazine, there was an article about steam in China; as I understood, steam locomotives were retired in 2006 or 2007

That is correct, China decided to "modernize everything" and they scrapped most of the steam locomotives in the year 2006/7.
Some of them left for tourist purposes (Mickey Mouse trains).

The one on the video is in the restricted area (a huge prison area) and we were the first foreigners who received the permission to visit the line. The line itself is in excellent condition and the small narrow gauge locomotives pull very often around 600t heavy trains (20-25 cars!). There are daily 2-3 pairs of regular trains for coal transport from two mines around the line. The trains mostly have also passenger coaches.
There are plans to electrify the line - but nothing else (two small electric engines are in the shed).

Here is a longer trailer of the video shots, which are not used in the main film. This all on 762mm gauge!

Enjoy!
