Is the steam loco the same as the South African Garrets?

Yep, Beyer-Garratt. Biggest loco the New South Wales Government Railways ran. Took 20 years of dreaming and 10+ years of work & fundraising ( that I know of ) .

South Africa did have bigger versions - don't know if any are operating.

Excellent news -thank you! I plan in the next years a trip to Australia.

The difference to South African Garratts is the track gauge. In SA they run on 1067 mm. A few of them are operational.
Greetings from Austria
