I felt like most of the fret suffered too much from the German groups tendency to model in the "American Flavor" mode instead of going for something more in the ballpark of prototypically correct for any particular 50 foot car. For a short period of time, there were five TTer's at one train show at the same time.

HOn3 cabs kits from Precision Scale perhaps, although, the buzz right now is that Precision Scale is changing hands. I haven't heard anything more substantive, but, the folks I got the word from are generally in the know.

If you don't mind my asking, what's your problem with handlaying track? You're building your own power and buildings, laying scenery, all that indicates you have the necessary skill set already.

Flat black, some folks wire up the motor and spin the wheels slowly while spray painting them. Also there are proponents of NeoLube, which is not actually a paint per se.

Several vendors have moved to Canon as a supplier, at least one major Korean Brass builder has been successfully using Canon motors for some years. As with all things, YMMV.
