My experience with the SW1200s is that they are a lot slower than the HP locos of all types. Nothing is wrong there, but the noise is likely a motor issue. My husband has changed out around a half dozen motors on the MTB SW1200s, and the replacement motors have yet to wear out.
We might try to make a 3' x 6' portable layout showcasing the starter set of Keuhn track as an example of what is out there for TT. Worthwhile. The track and turnouts are good. But it's smaller code so larger flanges like BTTB might not work well. If I remember right my old rail bus hit the 'spikes...

I thought you were going to use two digit locos for switchers, three digits for passenger units, and four digits for freight/general service units.
