I'm fairly sure it's PST/GST they're charging, not duty... Fedex does the same.

One serious disadvantage of direct-only is that sales to newcomers are, I would think, much more likely to come from in-person exposure in a hobby shop (as few of those as still survive, anyway) than just seeing them on the 'web, thus limiting their sales and the growth of the hobby in general. But...
