TT Scale passenger trucks

TT Scale passenger trucks

Postby Murad » Sat Feb 09, 2019 3:45 pm

Hi there!
I have a few HP passenger cars without trucks. I've tried to find some for sale on ebay dut there is none of them,, so I decided to make my own. What type of trucks was the most common passenger truck on us railroads in 1940-70's?
P.S. And what about John Fisher's castings? Do somebody have masters for them?

Murad,

How many cars do you need trucks for?

I have 15 HP passenger car kits which have no trucks, so the kits remain unbuilt. Yesterday I received a kit made by John Harmon bought through ebay to make 6 passenger cars. The kit has trucks for all six cars and the trucks are castings made by Bowser. These look good but the openings for the axles are about 1.5 mm diameter while the axles are 1 mm. It looks like the wheels will be too loose when installed.

After spending so much money for the kit it's disappointing to be faced with this hassle. I hope to find bearing inserts to put in the trucks, maybe the ones from Peho. There's more research to be done.

Probably these castings can be used as patterns to make more trucks. That's also needs researching.

Murad, what about to contact Peresvet. They have recently the CIWL coaches which have very nice trucks, very similar to US trucks from the first half of last century. You will need to modify a bit on them to get the real US design.

Terry C,

I have these same castings and they look like copies of the Rokal coach trucks. I bought bearings from 3SMR in the UK, drilled the holes out to fit the bearings and used Muellers pin point axles. Can't stop them on a grade!
Mueller also does wheels with a blunt axle to fit the Rokal trucks but, I've not had much success with them.

Thanks. I've considered this approach. Only inserts which I knew about are from Peho and size isn't specified. Wheels with the kit are 1/4 inch diameter (6+mm) and I haven't seen Modmueller wheels that small. I'll try to find some metal tubing for making bearing sleeves to fit into the castings and use the trucks and wheels which are with the kit. If inserts work then possibly more trucks can be made by 3D printing.
