Russian gauge (dirty words tale)

Postby Arseny » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:47 am

A long time ago, when the first Russian railroad Saint-Petersburg - Moscow had been being built, the engineers came to the Tsar Nikolay I and asked him, if they should make the railroad gauge the same as European gauge, or maybe they should make it a bit wider.
"What?!" - asked Tsar - "Wider?! For a f#cking dick you should make it wider?!"

But engineers understood him too literally...

Since that time russian gauge is 7 cm wider...

Yeah, the South was a whole mess of gauges, ranging from various narrow gauges through standard gauge to five foot to even wider, I believe there were even a couple lines with six foot gauge...

Then there was the proposed Breitspurbahn, with 9' 10.125" wide tracks (3 meters).

On a related note, there was also the tracks for the "Supertrain" of the NBC series of the same name as well.
