RS3 Info

Postby Marquette » Wed Sep 08, 2010 12:10 pm

This list doesn't win quite as much as the U-Boat and SD45 lists, as I unfortunately don't have phase information for the RS3. However, the list is reasonable in range, as it contains as-delivered info, plus later renumberings/sales for quite a few roads. It is, though, of course, not at all complete - but a great overview, I think (and quite a few very modellable railways in the list, too!)

i've got a sneaking feeling those algerian RS3s may have been RSC2s or RSC3s, based on the limited information i've seen.

It's possible, though the b/n is in series with RS-3 production - hence why on this list.

true enough. but if you look at the list here http://www.thedieselshop.us/Alco_RS3.HTML 78880-2 were D&H units, and 78886-9 were rutland RS3s.

missing from the list are the numbers 78883-5.

might be a coincidence, but these are the builder's numbers of uruguay's RSC3s.

G'day All,
New South Wales Railways purchased 40 RS3 made in Canada see http://www.nswrtm.org/exhibits/the_exhibits/4001.html This Loco has been recently restored, passed its trials and is currently having body workdone then will be painted. I hope to be doing a trip behind it on 5th December.

hi

NSW Railways and Uruguay had a deal in common, having British colonial steam locos that looked very similar, buying RSC3s and then dieselising with a big order of related cab units, though it was Alco DL500s and not GE shovelnoses for NSW.

were any of the NSW RSC3s modelled by the TT3 guys there? i heard of a mooted etch for the alco 45 class (DL541) but do not think it came to light.

Is it possible to figure out which version the RR bought, if I just know builder nummer and built date?

i think the 3 north american lines that rostered RSC3s also had RS3s so you are pretty safe, unless you want to model a particular SOO or SAL or Pacific Great Eastern / BC Rail unit, in which case you might check the number first.

if it's outside the US or canada it is at least potentially an RSC3. RS3s weren't common outside north america, but wiki says spain and brazil owned some. there may be others. some L&NE RS2s went to liberia.
