I would love to have a goat and a goose in our back yard, but they are specifically forbidden as far animals by our local zoning codes. For some reason, ducks were not on the list, so my wife got a rescue permit from Fish & Game when she first found our Muscovy duckling who was hatched with only one leg. "Miss Duckley" is now three years old, and enjoying life in her pen (with her roommate Serena) in our back yard, along with two other males who live in their own pen, plus four wild ducks who have chosen to stay in our back yard full time, and several others who come and go in both the front and back yard on a regular basis. It never ceases to amaze me how individual their personalities are, and how they seem to try to communicate with us by wagging their tails and opening their mouths as if they were talking, whenever we are out in the yard.
A lot of people dislike Muscovy ducks in the neighborhood, and I was never particularly fond of them myself, until I got to know our ducks personally. Now, I think I like ducks better than many people.
