Thanks. Granted that the couplers are not exactly subtle. If I could get them I would install Peho units. These do work, however. Personally the one sided coupler is not an option. My trains don't just run in circles, but have to be able to shunt, double head and push. The concession of function over form is a sacrifice that I'm willing to make (in this case) for operation.

Hmmm.... is it possible to at least pull them back between the buffers at all?

Nah. The hoses and fake coupler block the way. The coupling distance isn't actually any wider than the old BTTB distance. It was a shame that the BR 211 chassis was longer and therefore had to be chopped down for the E499.0 shell. Had it not been I could have used the built in close couplers. My plan is to look for Peho's on my next trip to Europe (which may be very soon).
