BR 86 problems, how to remove the drop arms to gain access

Postby Rich1853 » Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:06 pm

Another dampflok problem, this one is a Tillig BR 86 article 02245. Symptoms in the forward direction are noisey like the gears aren't meshing, moving very slowly sometimes it stops while the gears are whinning out.
Going in reverse there seems like no problem but I could also hear a little gear whinning at top speed (14VDC), when stoping the linkage the motor and gears still could be heard like whinning out as in the foward direction. The noise is coming from the gearbox in the front.
How do I remove the two drop arms of the leading and trailing wheels to gain access for the removal of the floor plate which I hope I could do a failure analysis.

My gute feeling is the end of the motor extension shaft is not engaging the bushing which keeps the gears properly meshed/ spaced.

Can you post some pics of what's in front of you? Tillig produced both a BTTB era BR 86 and an updated model. I have the updated version and I've taken it apart so I may be able to help.

BR86 frame

Hi

Here is the older construction.
With a tweezer or small screwdriver bend out the metal part between the wheels. This locks the front ( and similarly also the rear axles). On the locoframe there is a little stub what holds them. When you reinstall bend back the metal part.
You can also bend very carefully the long part of the front axle to hang out the latch from the frame.

Thanks a million. That's the version that I got. It came in a blue Tillig box with instructions, exploded view part list. (dated 28.02.02)
Thanks again

The long arm is quite springy ie you can bend it like the flat clockspring and unlatch the front axle.

Bad news the plastic gear attached to the worm gear is cracked and was floating on the worm gear shaft. That section of the shaft is knurled and the inside diameter of the gear is worn smooth.

That is a bad news. That cogwheel was never sold separately. It was always a part of the long worm.
Maybe with a little luck you can find a new worm axle with gear or probably is easier to find a gear with 20 teeth and module 0,4.
Take care in the bearing boxes there are tiny metal balls as part of the bearing.

Thanks, I wouldn't know where to begin on how to gain access to the worm gear. I didnt see a way from the top nor the bottom, maybe from the front. Waiting for a response from the seller.

The part number of the Schneckenwelle, vollst. (complete worm gear assembly)(item 22 on the part list) is 201700
No luck so far.
There is an auction of 20t spur gears for the BR 56 & 86 Dampfloks on ebay, that Tillig part number is 310330

Look around in US, the 20T Mod 0.4 gear is quite common. I was just looking on NWSL. Unfortunately exactly this gear is missing from their catalog. They carry Mod 0.4 gears, just the 20T option is missing. Probably other sources may be better.
