outline diagram of a 1932 ARA boxcar

Postby scaro » Tue Dec 04, 2012 12:06 pm

hi

i am wondering if someone can post a diagram of this boxcar, with the 6-5-6 door, and the flat ends as on the Seaboard version?

had a sick day and being bored, i got out my rivet tool and knives, and have done a side for one, but for the door i think looking at a plan is a wise move ... one's eyes are drawn to door detail a lot more than side rivets, so i'd like to be more exacting. it is said that atlas haggised up the door on their HO version, well, just a tiny bit.

cheers, ben

I'm quite surprised to find that my Ted Culotta book on the ARA 1932 cars does NOT have such a drawing!

In any case... this is the car in question:

Seaboard 1932 ARA Box... 6-5-6 door

Seaboard 1932 ARA Box... B-end... flat

thanks richard. it seems to be one of those designs picked up by medium sized and smaller railroads, a bit like AC&F's 8'6" internal height howe truss "de facto" standard boxcars, but not so obscure.

in this case the 1932 design was the father of the 1937 AAR so they must have been on the right track.

i could find an erie drawing of the 1932 ARA design but it's no good on the door detail.

cheers, ben

Hmmm... I think one of my issues of Mainline Modeller may have such a drawing... I'm not sure. I'll look... tonight if I'm not too dead after work, otherwise in the next day or two.

The Trains Index http://trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx implies that the following articles include '32 ARA boxcar drawings...
MM Oct 1992
MM Nov 1992
MM Jan 1993
MM Apr 1993
MM Dec 1993
... but I don't know which, if any would be the 6-5-6 door + flat end version.

MM Oct 1997 is specifically on lettering the SBD cars... but may not have a full drawing.
