If I decide to get them maybe I'll throw one in a loco and see if I experience the same problems you did.

They don't make them. Oh, they have them advertised, but you are looking at a wait of better than 6 months and you'll only get it if they have enough orders. I tried for a year, dealing with digitax directly, before giving up. There has never been a production run of these to my knowledge.

What I would recommend is a function decoder. Most basic models have 2 to 4 fx outputs for just this kind of thing.

As far as the problems with Digitrax...

Function outputs not working, decoder does not respond, speed functions full on and does not turn off, use of function outputs effects motor output, analog (DC) function does not work, does not work out of the box (?), command station is subject to random glitches which cause the unit to lock up and irregular locomotive operation...

The digitrax system has been described as old tech by many retailers in the know. Proceed at your peril.

Can you give me a couple examples of these? It's exactly what I've been looking for but all searches lead to full function decoders.

You should be able to get basic full function decoders for $22. Basic ESU Lokpilot can be had for EUR14.24 ( http://www.modellbahnwelt24.de/index.php?a=10922& ), and Basic Lenz is EUR15.55 http://www.modellbahnwelt24.de/index.php?a=15274& ). I did not check US retailers, but expect the prices in that $25 range. Both of these are NEM652 though.

Aha! $17 at EuroLokShop http://www.tee-usa.com/store/product7782.html

I need to do a little homework and find out if the 2 extra wires from a NEM652 (compared to NEM651) are required for anything.

The green and purple are additional function outputs.

Very cool. But, at the sake of sounding stupid, what is prototypical regarding lights? Main lights are on when loco is running and third light gets turned on only while driving?

You can think of the top light as being the high beams. When entering stations or yards it is turned off.

So is this pretty normal or just in some countries / regions?
