North American Prototype Couplers?

North American Prototype Couplers?

Postby AstroGoat760 » Fri Oct 23, 2009 9:09 pm

With all the discussion about making and linking up modules at the next NMRA convention, I am curious as to if there will also be a standard coupler type used for the US prototype items that are taken with.

I know that there are basically 4 different coupler types that are used for US prototypes.

1.) HP automatics
2.) Kadee #713/714
3.) N scale
4.) Custom built

How many out here run US prototype?
Of those, who runs what type of coupler?

I use Kadee #713/714s for all equipment that has been rebuilt and/or repaired and/or refitted. HP automatics still comprise the majority of my fleet.

The FP7 and Gold Coast wagons are all Kadee 714s.

The Kadee 714's were the "standard" for anyone switching from the old HP ones. But they were a bit of a compromise, they were actually made for HOn3 so they're a little too big. A lot of guys are going to N scale, like the Microtrains 1015/1025, they're better looking. If you install them carefully and get them set right, they will work with the 714's with no problem. Possum Valley Models makes a resin coupler height gauge that makes setting them up easy.

I guess that I was not as clear as I hoped I was, in that I am curious as to if anyone else uses Kadee 713/714s, or will I have to make a "idler car" to couple up to other's TT locomotives and cars.
