North American passenger cars

Postby LVG1 » Wed May 01, 2013 12:33 pm

I'm very interested in passenger trains. Unfortunately, information about North American passenger cars is rare and rather superficial.
I know that Budd, Pullman and ACF made streamliners. I've read more manufacturers' names referring to cars for commuter trains. And there's information about Amtrak's and VIA's current cars on Wikipedia.
I'ld really like to learn more about North American passenger cars.

Did the American car manufacturers keep to any internal or external standards?
What are the spotting features of the various manufacturers' cars and the various types, respectively?
Did the customers select from a range of passenger cars offered by the manufacturers or were the cars individually designed to the customers' specifications?
Which "generations" of car types are discernable?
And what about Canadian cars?

I hope, there's someone here who can enlighten me.
