Norfolk Southern 4610

Postby AstroGoat760 » Wed Jan 25, 2012 12:16 am

For those that have not heard yet, Norfolk Southern has repainted their GP59 #4610 into a modified NS black paint job with Operation Lifesaver decals on it. 4610 was for a long time painted in Southern Railways sylvan green and white, in Southerns old passenger livery.

NS had loaned the 4610 to the Southeastern Railroad Museum at Duluth, Ga for some time, before recalling it to active duty.

If my phone could interface with PhotoBucket, I would have posted one. Right now I am about 2 hours from home with a full day at the VA hospital tomorrow, so it will be a it before I can upload a photo or a link.

The only decent photo that I can find is copyrighted, so I will just provide a copy of the link for it. Not too bad looking, but I liked the old paint job better.

Cool pic. My memory is terrible but I think I've seen one of those (that one?) recently. Pretty cool.

The 4610 was recently worked on, and was out in service late last month, so it will be a bit until the 4610 shows up and people recognize it, as it does not stick out so much anymore.

ConducTTor, from the photos that you had posted from your trip some time ago to the museum in Duluth, GA; I am pretty sure that you did see the 4610 in it's Southern paint job.

From what it looks like, part of the reason that NS did the repaint is due to it's upcoming heritage painted fleet, where they are going to paint 19 modern diesel-electrics in paint schemes of roads that NS has acquired over the years and still operates the track of, so New Haven is not going to see a NS diesel in it's paint job. The May issue of Trains has an article on this, with drawings of what the original 18 will look like on page 16.

Since the article was written, Penn Central was added to the list, and the first: NS 8098 has rolled out in Conrail Blue.

Here is a link to the site listing all upcoming heritage units with images of what they will look like:

Norfolk Southern has added a 20th Heritage Road to it's paint program: Monongahela Railway, which served Pennsylvania and West Virginia from 1901 to 1993.

There is an article in the June issue of Trains Magazine that is on page 16 that has some more details about Norfolk Southern's heritage program, with photos of their Conrail and Southern diesels.

With KCS, Amtrak, Union Pacific, and Norfolk Southern doing heritage diesel programs, I wonder when BNSF and CSX will take part.
