not sure what i think of these things.

people will swear the original southern ran low short hood geeps till they're blue in the face based on shots of the 4610 and it takes a while to convince them it isn't a southern locomotive and couldn't have been ... and even if it had been it would have been in black tuxedo, not green.

i guess so many years have elapsed since the demise of these railroads now that there's less chance of muddying the waters.

with 4610 though, because the GP59 was a 1980s loco and the southern ceased to exist in that decade, there's always been a degree of confusion.

I am biased to the southern scheme though in any format, probably because it resembles the old UK southern region which I remember so well from my dear old Dad spending forty odd years working for it

The first GP59 rolled off the assembly lines in 1985. Southern and Norfolk & Western merged in 1982. All GP59s went to Norfolk Southern.

There a lot out there that do not do their homework.

Some years ago we went to the Smithsonian Museum of American History, where Southern 1401 is on display. While we were there, there was an adult older than us that made the claim that the 1401 was built by Ben Franklin and as owned by George Washington himself. She freaked out when James corrected her, pointing out specs in his book and the placards on the 1401.

There is a nice article in September 2012 issue of Trains, starting on page 14, and ending on page 17, covering the Norfolk Southern heritage fleet "reunion" at Spencer, NC; as well as some information on the last few members of the Norfolk Southern heritage fleet.

Has anyone been lucky enough to get any photos of the new Norfolk Southern heritage fleet yet?

There is another one-of-a-kind Norfolk Southern locomotive out of the shops now:

Norfolk Southern #6920, an EMD SD60E (a NS modified SD 60).

Awesome...simply freakin' awesome!
