I hope you've instilled in him that loosing is only for loosers! ;)

LOL! Well they're actually doing well. They're in third place in their region but it's a bit of a mess, the two teams they lost to both lost to teams they beat.. Playoffs start on Saturday, so we'll see if they can keep going for long.
I had to tease him though, in a game last week he scored a goal for the other team. He's a backfielder, one of the other backs tried to clear a ball and missed with about three of the other team around him. Jon went in, kicked it and bounced it off the other back and right past the goal keeper.
It's amazing how easily a red head can blush!

Even the pro's do it. I remember watching the US team in the 2015 Womens' World cup and it happened.

Off-topic cultural note:

How many North Americans would have called their soccer player a Footballer (Fußballer?)

Well I figured here almost everyone would know what it meant!
One of the referees that works a lot of the high school games is originally from Australia. He was great to ask questions when I was starting to learn (My son only started about 18 months ago, he played golf and switched!).
I could catch him before or after a game, and if anyone in the stands questioned a call he would explain it. And he always uses "footballer", it must have stuck!
