Modern Western Cars and Buildings in TT

Modern Western Cars and Buildings in TT

Postby ees1bk » Thu Aug 18, 2011 5:12 am

I'm currently thinking of starting a new layout project. It's not my "main" TT project (Alpine OBB) which I've been planning for years, but a much smaller portable switching layout project maybe 2m x 40cm in all.

However I'm coming a little unstuck - I already have one of the modern Herpa articulated lorries and will I'm sure be shopping for more - but I'm absolutely failing to find anyone who does any modern western cars! I don't really care what it is - Merc, BMW, Ford, Opel, Land Rover, Smart, Volvo, Toyota - anything like that would do fine. It just needs to be to a decent quality and a recognisable design. I just don't want Trabants, Volgas or Wartburgs!

Also, I'm looking for a modern-ish corrugated building - you know the sort of pre-fabricated industrial buildings you see everywhere these days. In N or HO, I'd be thinking Pikestuff or similar. So far found nothing like that in TT. I suppose if the worst comes to the worst I can scratch build it from Pikestuff parts, I guess probably using the N-scale version so the corrugations are smaller - I think in that case the HO ones would be a bit chunky and that wouldn't look right.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Regards, Bevis.

Try to find Gabor's cars:
http://gabor-modellbau.de/NewFiles/FrameTT.html
(there is an error on their site, so the second picture is not visible, but look here:
http://gabor-modellbau.de/Neue%20Websit ... 0Lipo2.jpg

Renault 12, Fiat 124, VW Beetle, VW Golf II, VW Passat, Mini Cooper are available.

Also, the Fiat 124 = Zhiguli are produced by V&V (vvmodel.cz) and Haedl.

Also I've found some models of modern cars on the Russian "Ebay-like" service - molotok.ru:
http://msk.molotok.ru/tt-1-120-15-avtom ... 06085.html
http://tatarstan.molotok.ru/16-modelej- ... 62180.html
http://tatarstan.molotok.ru/16-modelej- ... 62180.html

- Mercedes, Opel, BMW

As seller says, they are made in Hong Kong; they are not exactly 1:120, they are a little bit oversized, approx. 1:110.
But maybe they although would be suitable for the TT-scale layout?

Arseny

Thanks for the tips - some of the Gabor models look like exactly what I want. Pity they only have artwork illustrations. However there's one of the Golfs listed on eBay Germany at the moment and the photos of that look pretty good, although I think the white interior might need toning down a bit!

I do have some of those Hong Kong 1:100 models already but the quality control was awful and the models aren't that great. Less than half the pack I got had reasonable paint work and even then the sills and frames were as big as the windows in most cases. I'm undecided - they could maybe be used in a scrapyard scene, but they're not really suitable for the foreground scene I need them for.

BTW thanks for the tip on Onega HO SZD tankers - I'm now the proud owner of one of them from modeldepo.ru and will probably get another next time we have a visitor coming from Moscow.

Bevis, look here:

BTW there is also Golf II available, made by V&V, but is is made exclusively for Tillig's shop in Zebnits.

You can also use Skoda, Moskvich and Wartburg for Western layouts too. These cars were exported in Western Europe, and Canada (Wartburg-311/312 - even in the USA).

I am glad that you have purchased nice H0-scale wagon. It's a pity that Onega do not work in TT, eh? ;)

I hope to get a chance to visit their store/showroom/museum at some point next year. I'll probably try and pick one up next visit.

We did see a fair number of Skodas here - they were the butt of many jokes. And actually a friend "inherited" a DDR-registered Wartburg for a while and used to drive it around town as it as basically immune to speed cameras. They'd never bother to send a speeding ticket to the DDR for a Wartburg! That was the only one I've seen here. Never seen a Moskvich or Volga in the former West.

I'm trying to do my Soviet layout in HO, just to be perverse. I'm really happy to have the Onega tankers as the "shorty" tank cars were the absolute first unique defining feature of Russian Railways I noticed as I took my first trip from Domededevo into Moscow.

Moskvichs were widely exported in the 1960s. In 1967-1969 more than 50% of the total amount of the produced Moskvichs were exported! Later, in 1980s, the sales fell down.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moskvitch_412

"It was launched in the United Kingdom in 1969, when the first 20 dealerships were set up and some 300 cars were sold; sales peaked in 1973 when some 14,500 cars were sold through a 268-dealer network. However, sales fell soon afterwards and Moskvich was withdrawn from the United Kingdom before the end of the 1970s, by which time it had fallen behind fellow Soviet brand Lada in the sales charts"

Volga M-21 was exported too, but in the late 1950s - early 1960s.
For example, the article from the British "Autocar" magazine, July 1960:
http://www.gaz24.ru/roadtest-1.JPG

As I know, M-21 (GAZ-21) was popular in Greece and in the Scandinavian countries.

Later, in 1970s-1980s, Volga GAZ-24 was not exported widely to the West...

I'm sure there is... I guess it all boils down to me always wanting to do something unusual! I do contemporary American overhead electric in HO when everyone else does diesel or steam.... I do modern Austrian diesel in TT and am working on Soviet Russia in HO. Part of the reason is self-preservation - if I had too many options available to buy, I'd end up spending far more money than I can afford on the models. Instead I can keep looking regularly and from time to time have the warm feeling that a successful acquisition is a real achievement.
