model railroad background pictures from computer games

On the search for background pictures for TT scale railroad dioramas, I came up with the idea of using scenes from computer games. Today, many computer games have excellent graphics. In games playing in urban or railroad environments, you find plenty of scenes that may work for a background. The attached picture just shows a first try I did today. The background picture is from the computer game World of Subways Vol. 1. The structure on the left side in the foreground is a cardstock kit from Clevermodels re-scaled from HO to TT.

At the first glance, it looks quite good.
But the catenary on the background picture doesn't fit into the scene.

Yes, that's right. Thanks to modern technology, it's no problem to remove the catenary. Now, it looks indeed much more realistic.

Yes, it does.
When I need a background, I'll call you...

That was my thought as well. I see you've removed it nicely

Very nice, indeed. An excellent idea. I'm not a "gamer" as such, perhaps you can explain the process you used to make this highly realistic, interesting photo.

In the computer game I used you can drive a subway on the PATH line. I run a train slowly through the the surface section East of Newark and watched from outside for an interesting spot I could use for the background picture. When having found such a location, I stopped the train and took a screenshot. Some details were modified by a photo editing software. So, I removed the overhead lines.

For the model part I used a baseboard I made some weeks ago to be used for temporare photo dioramas. The size is 35 cm x 25 cm with three tracks completely ballasted and weathered but without any permanently attached structures. I arranged the buiding and the rolling stock on that baseboard and took a photo in front of a light grey background. In the photo, I masked out the model part and put it as a layer above the background picture from the computer game.

BTW, the same baseboard I also used for my Hamburg diorama, this time with a real photo as background, see http://www.ttnut.com/mkb-kit-of-aho-tower-t1613.html

I do not remember if I posted this link already or not...

You can get a lot of backdrop buildings pictures here:

In the meantime, I made a homepage on temporary dioramas: http://www.joernpachl.de/model_rr_temporary.htm

Up to now, there are just the two scenes I already presented in this forum. Howver, there are plans for more projects to be added.

My H0 shelf layout uses an image from cgtextures.com. That site has a wealth of useful images intended for games which could be used in modelling, I'd recommend a visit.
