Did anybody Google search kesselwagen, than click on images. Bingo, loads of prototypes pictures. 10 years later from the orginal post but nobody really answered the question.

It's still a bit tough though - there are like 90 million different types of tankers lol. Anyway, it doesn't matter to me that much anymore. I'll just run them and they'll be fine.

Tell me about it.
It's for future reference for persons who actually do search a subject.

I used to be a member of a train club which used to have one of those tank cars.
The car was build by Waggonfabrik Gebrüder Lüttgens, Saarbrücken, Germany. The original owner was Kriegsmarinewerft Wilhelmshafen (Navy docks). Original number: DR Münster 940075.
It was in Denmark at the end of the war where it was confiscated in 1945 and then leased to DDPA - Det Danske Petroleums Aktieselskab (Danish Petroleum). Number changed to AB ZE 509010. Then the car belonged to oil and gas distribution company B. Ringsted from Copenhagen (picture) and its home station was Prøvestenen (the gasoline island) near Copenhagen.
Number changed to DSB ZE 502721 in 1959.
Number changed to DSB 21 86 070 0 721 - 6 in 1966
Sold to Svedakemi in 1977
Number changed to DSB 23 86 720 2 721 - 2 in 1980
Decommissioned in 1987.
Moved from Copenhagen freight station to Struer in 1999 and it was owned by Struer train club since then.
I think that it was scrapped in 2018.

Do you want more? BTTB prototypes were standard WW2 cars, hundreds or thousands of them were manufactured and used also after the war all around Europe (not only in Germany). There might be some German www pages about the tank cars. I can help with the cars which stayed in Denmark after the war.

No that's ok, it's not critical for me. Back when I first posted the question I didn't know if the BTTB tanks had a real prototype. Now I know enough that I'm ok with it.
