Lionel conversions

I managed to get the Kadee couplers assembled without losing any springs. That's a first.
Am I right in thinking that the MTL ones come ready assembled?

The MTLs where are delivered assembled or as a kit. Whatever you order. They have the advantage that they are clip together. They can't be falling apart.

I have milled an adapter, that the MTL stands a bit over.

Edit: This reminds me of the project I started. Damn - nearly forgotten.

That's very neat. By the look of it, the original gap in the chassis is the right height, but the coupler needs to be a cm or so further forward. Is that right?

The adapter is like a 0.5mm shim. Due to the smaller claw, the MTL coupler is mounted lower. It shifts the coupler 1.5 mm forward and corrects the middle of the gap in the chassis.

I should probably think about to do a small production run.

Okay. I would now be looking for a better millable material as PA6, perhaps PVC. If I find the fitting round workpieces for my CNC-mill then we will see further.

So that's the couplers done. Obviously a paint job is required on the styrene. I may try filling in the gaps either side or I may just leave them, they don't really bother me.
Now for the truck sideframes and I'm done...apart from toning down the lights a bit.

By the way don't do this:

For me, it looks like a Kadee coupler. Is it one? Then the adjustment further forward is not necessary.

A mistake that can happen to everyone.

It is, but if it were further back it wouldn't clear the front of the truck frame. Cutting away the rear of the coupler pocket would make it unstable and I don't want to start hacking the truck frame.
For a first attempt, it will do - time to move on!

Here's my write-up, I hope it's of help to someone and not too wordy.
You'll see it refers to Carsten Bauer’s document but I don't know whether this is generally available. Maybe it could go in the docs folder, along with mine?
