Were some of the non-special offerings produced in smaller quantities?

I have collected all the 1:160 series and most of the 1:120 series (with duplicates) for $10 or less.
I have 4 to go.
The 1:120 4-4-0 steam engine is on ebay (just hasn't dropped into my price range yet) but the SP, MILW, & D&RGW
1:120 F3's seem more rare.

The last piece (1:120) finally fell into my price range ($10) and my collection is complete (including 1:160 models but only the turbine from the century series),

Some rare models? I think the NYC GP9 5964 is here the one and only series model.

In the near future, I will photograph all Lionel models that I can find. With help from Mike and taxari I should find all series models.

I collected the information about all Lionel 1:120 models and made a list. Don't hesitate to copy it into the first post or make some additions.

There are four categories that Lionel made engines for and the pre-production units:

1.) Classic Series (Where the collection initially started, with 6 models.)
2.) GP-9 Series (GP-9's in 6 different paint schemes.)
3.) F3 Series (F3 locomotives in 6 different paint schemes.)
4.) Century Club Series (5 models. Available to Lionel Club Members in VERY limited quantities.)
5.) Pre-Production units (Lionel auctioned them. They were VERY limited quantities. Probably 60+ overall.)

Highlighted in color as Steam, Electric, and Diesel-Electric locomotives.

1.) Classic Series (blue tin)
  • Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Super Chief F3 #22
  • Chessie System GP-9 (B&Q 6575)
  • The General (4-4-0)
  • New York Central Hudson #5405 (4-6-4)
  • Norfolk and Western J-Class #600 (4-8-4)
  • Pennsylvania GG1 #4817 (2-C+C-2)
2.) GP-9 Series (blue tin)
  • Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe #722
  • Boston and Maine #1723
  • New York Central #5964
  • Pennsylvania #7215
  • Southern Pacific #5602
  • Union Pacific #132
3.) F3 Series (blue tin)
  • Baltimore and Ohio #161
  • Denver & Rio Grande Western #5524
  • Milwaukee Road #85A
  • New York Central #3502
  • Pennsylvania #9500
  • Southern Pacific #6100
4.) Century Club Series (silver tin)
  • Lionel Lines Berkshire #726 (2-8-4)
  • New York Central F3 A-A #2333 (a pair with double lightning stripes and golden horns)
  • New York Central Hudson #773 (4-6-4) (one golden dome)
  • Pennsylvania GG1 #2332 (2-C+C-2) (five golden stripes)
  • Pennsylvania S-2 Turbine #671 (6-8-6)
5.) Pre-Production units
  • New York Central F3 #3502 (black and double lightning (freight) instead of series dark grey and single)
  • New York Central System GP-9 (P&LE 5735) *
  • New York Central System GP-9 (P&LE 7475) *
  • there are also pre-production models with minor differences in colors or printing, like:
    • Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Super Chief F3 #22 (different tones of red)
    • Baltimore and Ohio #161 (side grilles in blue)
    • Boston and Maine GP-9 #1723 (matte black instead of series glossy)
* maybe for a Century Club Series set which never produced in series
