Because 44 is 256, which is out of band, and 22=4, and as everybody knows, single digits by themselves, suck.

Fun with math is fun!

23, because that is Everything. Also, 2+3=5, and never forget the Law of Fives.

Division by 23 also makes for interesting results:

1 / 23 = 0.0434782608695652173913...

11/23 = 0.4782608695652173913043...

15/23 = 0.6521739130434782608695... (this chunk repeats infinitely)

Note that the repeating chunk is the same sequence, just offset from each other. If you go further along in the repetitions, every number has the identical sequence of digits repeating. This sequence is 22 digits long (which is twice 11, another important number), and the sum of the digits is 99... which is also interesting: 9+9=18, 1+8=9, so 99 is 9. Which is 3*3, and 3 is the number for me!

How about the 23 pairs of human chromosomes? You didn't mention them. Are they not good enough :( ?

Of course they are! There are just WAY too many things that involve 23 to list them all! :)
