Installing handrails on MTB switcher?

Installing handrails on MTB switcher?

Postby ctxmf74 » Thu Feb 11, 2016 4:26 am

Hi all, Got my Digitrax decoder in and running and couplers attached. Took about 2 hours to finally get them mounted high enough to match my other equipment, I guess that due to the need to accept euro type couplers as well US style couplers? Now I'm looking at the hand rails , I've drilled out the holes so they press in but I'm wondering what to glue them with. Anyone have any good or bad experience gluing their's on and keeping them on? I like the metal rails by the cab door and am thinking about making some for the end and side rails too.........DaveB

In general I don't add handrails, etc to my equipment as it ends up getting broken even with careful handling (and sometimes just sitting in the box!). But, when I do, I use Gorilla super glue - the gel version.

I'd use a dab of the thin ACC on the inside of the shell in the hole for the wire. Should be enough to hold the handrails.

I like to use brass wire for handrails so they can bend instead of break if hit. I decided to go with .012 wire for the switcher ,once painted it should match the metal rails to the cab pretty well. Hardest part is drilling the .015 holes in the metal frame. The upper plastic area is no problem.....DaveB

Got the handrails installed along with some cab sunshades. Still need to paint the ends of them white but I think they'll work out ok, they seem fairly strong. A new photo is in the gallery. Will be nice to get back to track laying once this engine is finished....DaveB

Thanks for fixing it. The sunshades look like the same kind the SP used on it's locos. I made them from thin brass sheet and a piece of wire....DaveB
