The long-distance trains do not use the same locomotive all the way. They change the locomotive several times.
As for the type of the locomotive - I think, any passenger locomotive can be used

Can you give me some examples? Anything currently available in TT?

Somewhere near Moscow you can use electric locomotives:

ChS-4T (available from Gonchar TT, small serie):

ChS-7 from B.V.-Z.D. and Norkin-Model (available as a kit)

http://www.norkin-model.ru/index.php?op ... &Itemid=71

Somewhere near Kiev - maybe ChS-4 from Gonchar TT:
http://12mm.ru/viewcard.php?id=62!61!73 ... 8!73!34!2f
or ChS-2
http://12mm.ru/viewcard.php?id=62!61!73 ... 7!6f!6e!2f
(but I am not sure, if any ChS-2 are in use somewhere on the way of the Moscow-Sofia train)

Somewhere else you can use diesel locomotives:
M62 (Roco, Tillig) or 2M62 (Modell-Express, Peresvet)
http://12mm.ru/viewcard.php?id=62!61!73 ... 2!2d!37!2f
(2M62 is used for this train on the Ukraine, between Lvov (Lviv) and Chernivtsi)
Between Chernivtsi and the Ukranian border you can use M62.

As for Romanian and Bulgarian railways - I do not know anything about their locomotives...

Romania has nothing easily modellable in TT. Bulgaria, you could probably get away with a class 07 - get a Roco Ludmilla (German class 132/232), some custom decals, and presto...
