I wish the photo of the "3rd buffer" wasn't crap. (I also took a photo of a TGV power unit that had it's front door open and coupler exposed. There were flood lights on it, but there was not enough light for the camera to take a decent picture.)

It is wider than the normal couplers, and was more curved, to allow rounding of curves.

There is sort of the same thing used on many American passenger cars to minimize the slack in/slack out effect inherent with knuckle couplers, as there is about an inch of slack per coupler set, on a long train that can make up quite a distance.

I will dig trough my train photo archive to see if there is a decent photo of this buffer/pad device.
