Exhibition diorama under construction

Exhibition diorama under construction

Postby jpachl » Tue Jul 09, 2013 3:59 pm

I started building a new diorama for display on the modell-hobby-spiel fair on 03-06 October 2013 in Leipzig, Germany. It shows a fictitious scene in New York City with a closed firehouse beside a rail yard. While not having a real prototype, there are several places in NYC that had that kind of athmosphere in the 1950s/60s, e.g., the area around former 30th street yard.

The attached picture shows the background picture I made from modified cutouts of seven different photos of NYC. This way, I created a picture showing a typical NYC scene that never existed in reality. On the left side, there is the firehouse placed in front of the background picture. On the right side, in front of the grey industrial building, the yard tracks and facilities will appear. The grey building is printed on the background but will be replaced by a half-relief structure.

The diorama will be displayed on the stand of US TT scale manufacturer Lok-N-Roll, probably with some rolling stock of that manufacturer on the yard tracks.

Looks very realistic  what are you planing on making the grey structure from?

Thank you. The grey structure will be a paper model with some extra details attached (air condition, etc.). As a loading facility in the yard area, I will use the Auhagen gantry crane #13308. The yard tracks will be in the foreground leaving sufficient space between the tracks and the gray building for passage of trucks to be loaded/unloaded.

In the recent years I was always on the Modell-Hobby-Spiel Fair.
Probably, I'll come this year again. So we'll possibly meet there.

I'm a regular since 2002. Already reserved a hotel room from 4th to 5th October. Will be on the fairground on both days. Looking forward meeting you there!

Here is a first test arrangement of some models on a naked base board in front of the background picture. It already provides a good imagination of how the diorama might finally look like. Left of the bumpers, there will be a wall to separate the yard area from public space. Along the front side of the base board, there runs a street, which is not shown on the diorama. The modelled area will more or less end at the curb.

Before leaving tomorrow for a family vacation at the Baltic Sea, here is a short update. I used the last days to do most of the modelling. While many details are still missing, most of the job has been done. Here are some photos of the current state. Even with a holiday break of three weeks, it will be no problem to finish the diorama on time.

Looks really good - the crane connecting to the factory is a great idea.

BTW, the crane is Auhagen #13308. A modified version of the same crane you can also see in my avatar picture. It fits very well to a North American layout.
