Decals

Decals

Postby j p » Thu Nov 07, 2013 6:13 am

Here is a summary of my artwork for decals - to make your wishes more specific.
I tried to make the artwork according to photos. In some cases the resolution of the pictures was not good enough and then the dates in the artwork may not be accurate (but within the range +/-)
The reweigh location may also be wrong. Most of the images were builder's photos but I tried to make some of the cars more realistic, so they got reweigh location different than on the picture (and later reweigh date, of course).
If you have the correct data, please let me know and I change it in the artwork. High resolution photos of the prototypes would be also highly appreciated!
For the precise dates (incl. day), I have not checked if the particular day was a weekday or Saturday or Sunday.

I'd be interested in 371950, the X23 and the two Kellogg tank cars. I have a photo of an X23, 42302, with a reweigh mark of P222 10-41... I also have a /lot/ of other photos, so if you're ever looking for something do let me know and I'll see if I have something!

I need more pictures of 8000 gallons tankcars.
I have a little TT-scale branch of AC&F Co. on my desk.
They can be also from the other manufactures. Anything that fits to Joma brass tank cars.
Regarding the X23 photo, that would be also interesting. I have one more Christoph kit which can be used for X23.

Okay. I did compile a list of schemes that fit the Joma tank car based on photos I have, but that was a paper list that I can't find anymore. But given I've got 3 more of them I need to do something with (2 are nearly completed in Imperial Oil lettering), I may well redo that list. Even if I just end up making them as plain black SHPX or UTLX cars. Give me a little bit to redo that, and I'll give you the results.

As for the X23...

Have you considered doing decals for an X26? As a USRA car, that's something that could be modelled using the RailTT boxcar, with the 5/5/5 ends from his stock car...

Speaking of, I'm going to have to look into doing artwork for decals for B&O USRA s/s boxcars...

To jp

Anymore information on the proposed UTLX decal set? Would the UTLX decal set be for the Joma brass tank cars?

I would be interested in one of the G31 sets, one of the SHPX sets, and one of the UTLX sets if they are for the 8000 gallon Joma brass tank cars.

Are there any differences between X26 and USRA single-sheated boxcar, besides the ends?
Maybe we can ask RailTT to produce the X26 version of his boxcar...

The X26 *is* the USRA single-sheathed boxcar! The RailTT model is a USRA clone, of a design originally made for the Canadian National.

Basically, to make a USRA s/s car using the RailTT boxcar, two things would need to be done: replace the ends and fishbelly underframe with the 5/5/5 ends and straight underframe from the stock car.

Another artwork for Joma tank car is almost ready: NATX 854.
I have a question for our freight car experts: the builer's photo shows the car with archbar trucks and cast wheels. No problem to make the artwork according to that.
What if you want to have this car with GoldCoast trucks? Should I change the reweigh date for later and wheels to 1W WROT ST WHLS?
The same thing also for the SHPX 9094 + 9098 / Spencer Kellogg. Those had archbar trucks too.

You may want to change the reweigh date, sure, but keep in mind tank cars weren't reweighed nearly as often as boxcars. Whereas boxcars were required to be reweighed periodically (every 18 months to two years, depending on time period), tank cars weren't, so you'd see the same reweigh date on tank cars for years.

As for the trucks/wheels... I'm not entirely sure! But that does seem reasonable, that it'd be relettered appropriately after they changed the wheels out...

The first sheet has been printed and here are some pictures.
The decals look better than on the pictures. I need either a better camera or younger hands.
Magnifying glass and tweezer are needed for applying the decals. Then MicroSet + MicroSol. Then clear paint (I used half-matt).
