Critique my station rail plan

Postby ConducTTor » Wed Sep 09, 2009 12:13 am

Hey guys, lately I've been thinking about replacing all my rail (the old school BTTB type) with Tillig rail. I'm also thinking about scrapping my current layout plans and growing in size to a full room layout. I've downloaded the AnyRail demo and I can just work within the 50 piece limit. I plan on using flex track everywhere except for (obviously) turnouts.

The bottom two tracks will lead to a locomotive depot, the three above them are for industry, and the rest is pretty obvious. The two tracks on the bottom left are just sidings/ auxilary tracks. All turnouts are EW2 for shallow (more realistic) angles and all curves are 353mm radius (again shallower for realism). For reference, the whole area is 10 feet by 38 inches.

Any comments/suggestions/criticisms are welcome. By the way, click on the pic for the full size version.

Here is a new version. I've had to omit some rail on the ends of the station to stay within the 50 pc limit. I also included some (HO scale - that's all that's available) buildings for reference.

I think it looks good. The only thing I would add is a shunting lead or drill track so that you can do some switching without blocking the main line.

CSD, that's a good point. I'm still plying around with the plan so I'll definately find a way to put that in. areibel, I've looked at those products and I'll likely use some of them on a part of the layout - I envision it much bigger than what I've shown here - I'm just doing it section by section to fit into the 50pc limit. For $55 I ought to just buy the full version...

Do you have a theme for your layout?

A theme? Not really. I think a theme would restrict the stock I can run too much.

Me likes. Any particular reason for the curve in the top 3 tracks? It would be hard to get the platforms in there. Unless, of course you did not plan on putting the platforms.
Also, I liked the 2 lines with a cross-over on the bottom better in the original plan. In the new plan, you may want to use a double-slip switch to save some space.
