Creeeeepy!!! UVB-76

I've been listening to this for over an hour now... it's sending a little shiver into me. It's bloody creepy!

Apparently this station has been broadcasting this signal since 1982... without change for many years, only VERY rarely there being a voice message - usually consisting of station identification followed by a string of numbers. Then back to the buzz.

A couple of times there've been conversations audible, like this one from last year:

I can't really understand it... maybe one of our Russian-speaking members could tell us the gist of it?

They're obviously communicating with with aliens. Or maybe the station is located close to the shore and it's like an audio lighthouse?

Did a bit more research on this and other so-called "number stations" that broadcast such strings of numbers on shortwave bands... no joke, they're coded messages being sent to spies. They use a one-time-pad cipher so they're uncrackable, thus perfectly safe to be broadcast over open channels... and the listener is perfectly safe too, since there's no way to tell who's listening to a particular frequency.

This station btw is about 150km from Moscow.

Whaaaaaat? Wouldn't it be easy as hell to triangulate the source if you really wanted - like if you're the government?

it is, and it has been done, even by amateur radio types. It's easy to triangulate the source, sure. But that still leaves you none the wiser as to who is receiving it and what is being said...

Yes - but you know who is sending it - so you're half way there.

lol

My point is, being halfway there, you still only learned something you already knew - that some spy agency is sending a message to an operative somewhere. And that's it. :)

But, you can find out who the spy is that is transmitting messages once you find the transmitter. You don't even have to do that. Get to the transmitter, turn it off and, their communication is severed (at least that particular one).
