Coupler hack

I have a set of Tillig coaches similar to the Karwendel Express in CSD's post-- http://www.ttnut.com/bttb-karwendel-express-art-nr-01320-t266.html. They are equipped with old style couplers and Tillig provided a set of fixed links for closer coupling. The mounting system is unique and there are no new Tillig couplers that fit, as far as I know.

So I made one by splicing a new style coupler to an old one from the coach set. The shape of the new one when cut down allowed it to slip-fit into the Karwendel style coupler which was also cut down. Crazy glue keeps them together.

This is just to show it can be done for those who want to use these cars with new couplers. Only one is needed to hook to the locomotive, the rest of the set can be joined permanently with the fixed links which came with the set.

Nice! I wonder if a plastic welding the two coupler pieces may be better (I've had problems with glues not holding small parts together well - too small of a surface area to get good contact).

We did that at a pipe factory I worked at. Theoretically you could heat the surfaces to be joined until the surface becomes a liquid, but not let it start to smoke, then join them.

Two issues I can foresee: one, the two pieces must be made of the same plastic, otherwise they'll not bond properly, if at all; two, these are tiny parts, it could be very difficult to heat both parts in such a way as to reach the optimum temperature, and then put them together before they cool down.

Trying to think of ways to make this go, I'm thinking this'd be a two-person job!

This particular coupler shape works well. When the new coupler is cut as shown the remaining wedge shape locks into the piece from the old coupler. It will stay together in the direction the train is pulling. The glue just keeps the two pieces from sliding apart vertically. But time will tell how well it holds up.

My first try a few months ago used a new style coupler with the arrow-shaped fitting for the old BTTB cars, it was all I had available. I could only make a butt joint between the two parts, which would not be strong. Also, cutting the coupler exposed the slot for the hook and the glue got into it easily. Almost worked.

The easiest way Ive found to weld to plastic parts is to touch the join with the soldering iron tip.
