Conversion of T435 onto GE U5B, U6B

Conversion of T435 onto GE U5B, U6B

Postby Murad » Sun Dec 11, 2016 2:37 pm

Was looking for any possible conversion of European locomotive and found one.
It's possible to convert T435 into GE U5B or U6B.
But I didn't find any information about these locomotives on NA railroads.
And the other possible conversion of T435 is GE Boxcab diesel. But there is not a lot of good quality pictures of this engine.

Oh that's an interesting potential project. I was thinking about doing research on NA prototypes that share chassis dimensions with German prototypes but haven't gotten around to it. Looking forward to any results from your project.

Ok, North American asking what's a T435? Never heard of GE U5B or U6B. More familiar with U25B, U28B, U33C and like that. Link or picture please.

Have several of the GE-Ingersoll Rand Boxcabs in HO. A TT version would be nice.

These locomotives were built by GE for export. They would be good if you model Brazil, or Honduras, or Costa Rica or some else countries in Latin America.
See rosters:

http://dieselshop.us/GE_U6B.HTML

Only one U6B locomotive was in service in USA, on the Lancaster and Chester Railroad. It is a small 29-mile (47 km) railroad in South Carolina, in the United States.
It was built in 1959.
But to say more, it was resold to Philippines Railways 105 after only 9 months of service on L&C.

So, to be historically correct, you can use U6B only if you model that small L&C Railroad in 1959.

The old " Second Diesel spotter's guide " lists the U5B , page 201,

Hampton & Branchville # 80 & 81

Santa Maria Valley - http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoPi ... ?id=108413

From memory ( ? ) I have a photo of a Massachusetts Central unit somewhere as well, that I found on the net ages ago.

The US units have straight walls on their cabs whereas the DR units are sloped outwards from the top down.

A straight repaint could pass the 3' rule, if you look sideways at the same time.

Consider also FM H10 or H12 locomotives, maybe they are suitable for the conversion too?

Fellow crew members, thanks for the education. Never knew such an engine existed. Looks like an EDM SW with the cab set right on the frame.
