That must have been awesome for those kids. "So what did you do today?". "I drove a train". :)

That puts my large scale ride on train set to shame.

There were some "Children's Railways" in GDR, too.
But after the Fall of the Wall they became "Park Railways" and have been operated by adults since.

What about the formerly Soviet "Children's Railways"? Are they still operated by children? Or have they also been changed into something more "contemporary"? :?:

In Russia, none of the Children's Railways were closed; even 3 new railroads were built in 2000s.
In Ukraine, several Children's Railways were closed, but some of them continue to work. There is a working steam locomotive on the Children Railway in Kiev!
In other Soviet Republics most of the Railways were closed, very few of them work; some of them work as entertainment.

In Russia, Children's Railways belong to RZhD (Russian Railroads) and work as educational enterprises.
In Saint-Petersburg, Children's Railway existed since 1948. Before 2011 it worked in northern part of the town, in very beautiful place. But it was reduced several times.
In 2011 another line was opened, in southern part of the town, leading to the town of Pavlovsk (see http://kronos.livejournal.com/57315.html )
I think it was placed in not good-looking place; and in addition it goes in parallel with "big" railroad; so there is no sense in using it as transport. But it works, and the equipment looks good and modern.

The one in Budapest is a nice trip through the hills of Buda. Last I know, it was still operated by children, too. Very much worth a visit if you ever find yourself in Budapest.

There's also a former Children's Railway, now Park Railway in Dresden. It's not operated by Children any more.
I've been in Dresden for almost ten years, but I've neither taken photos of it, nor driven with it, yet.

The park railway in Dresden, as the other park railways in the Eastern part of Germany, is still operated by children. Only locomotive drivers and supervisors are adults. As a former Dresden resident I visit the city at least once a year and always run the park railway.
